Love from the Children of Langkloof South Africa

If you may count every drop of water in the ocean and
count every grain of sand in the sea -
multiply it by a thousand and that's how much I love you.
- George of Langkloof

While it is tempting to reword "grain of sand in the sea" to "grain of sand in the desert" or "grain of sand on all the world's beaches," consider how much more sand lies on the sea bottom than on beaches or deserts.

Read more love letters from the children of Langkloof (scroll down on that page to "some letters from the children")

These love letters were written in response to the efforts of a group of teenage girls from Cincinnati Ohio several years ago working to help rebuild a South African village by the name of Langkloof. As far as I can tell, the project is no longer active, as I did not receive a reply to my emails to the address on their website.

Carpe Diem - Seize The Day

Carpe Diem (Seize The Day) - Horace

Today is the first and last day of forever. - Stephenie Meyer (Twilight Saga)

Life is now. There was never a time when your life was not now, nor will there ever be. - Eckhart Tolle

"Seize The Day" (Carpe Diem) is sometimes interpreted as an invitation to party irresponsibly - without regard for the consequences. My interpretation of Carpe Diem is to seize the day in the sense of honoring the importance and sanctity of each day we live. It is so easy to delay the important parts of living until another day. But don't do that... Do something truly important Today. Make Today count. Today - each Today - is the most important day of your life.

Life is no brief candle to me - George Bernard Shaw

Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

We would never have a word for Joy if there were no suffering.
- Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Today, I am profoundly grateful for ALL of life. I am thankful for everything good in my life. I am also thankful for everything that I perceive as "bad," for those elements sharpen the quality of my experience of life. My painful experiences both provide a contrast that heightens the more enjoyable aspects of life, and also become my teacher to constantly refine my thoughts and actions along the road of life.

Without the contrast and stimulus of life challenges, my life would become like a stagnant pond, and I become like a log floating in it. I am grateful that life is more like a raging river, with sharp drops and quick turns.

Every problem... Norman Vincent Peale

Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don't have any problems, you don't get any seeds.
- Norman Vincent Peale

In their own way, problems can be blessings. They can be the prod to get us out of our complacency and into action.

Problems create an opportunity for us to exercise our ingenuity, to plan, to persevere, to interact with our social network, and to feel a sense of accomplishment when we finally overcome the unexpected roadblock.

If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?
- Percy Bysshe Shelley

What's the problem? Sometimes we have a generalized sense that something is not right, without not knowing the true problem. This is especially common when the weather is cold and gray, the days are short, and we are housebound.

If you are feeling the "winter blahs," try...

1. Get more physical exercise, even if it's on the treadmill.

2. Crank up the lights around you.

3. Focus on projects that keep you mentally and physically active and interacting with others.

See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil.

See no evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil.
- Japanese pictorial maxim (the Three Wise Monkeys)

The message behind this famous image has been debated, so I'll just say what it means to me...

1. Mind your own business. What your neighbor does (within the law) is none of your concern. Accept that behavior is not evil simply because it is different.

2. Don't listen to gossip. Don't even listen when people speak badly of others.

3. Never gossip or speak unkindly of others.

This does NOT condone being an unconcerned citizen. This does NOT mean to look the other way if your co-worker is pilfering the cash drawer or you witness a crime on the street.

How to Deal with Rejection

I take rejection as someone blowing a bugle in my ear to wake me up and get going, rather than retreat. - Sylvester Stallone

To go against the dominant thinking of your friends, of most of the people you see every day, is perhaps the most difficult act of heroism you can perform. - Theodore H. White

Not everyone is always going to like what you do. Your job application, your book proposal, your offer of marriage is going to get rejected sometimes - perhaps often. Your boss, your spouse, even the person behind you in the supermarket checkout line is occasionally going to think that you are doing it all wrong. Don't take it personally.

Deal with rejection by...

1. Asking yourself, objectively, if there is something to be learned about yourself from the experience.

2. Just letting to go. It's their problem, not yours. They probably had an argument with someone else, have heartburn, or are just grumpy and looking for someone to grump at.

There are funny quotes and inspirational quotes, but can a quote be both funny and inspirational? I think there are many quotes that are funny, often by being sarcastic, that carry a truly insightful and inspiring message about the nature of life. Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde are two authors that I think have shown the ability to use humor in the service of insight.

Since I began Daily Inspiration - Daily Quote, I have collected a very large number of quotations, but my organization of those quotes was a little lacking. I have created a new home for the best of my collection of inspirational quotes - including a section of funny quotes that I consider to be also insightful.

To make it easier for you to remember how to find my inspirational quotes collection and to share them with your friends, I have put the index at www.quotes-inspirational.com

You can browse the quotes by category and by author. The categories are...

Attitude truly is EVERYTHING. All life is a magnificent blessing. Each of us has been blessed in our own way. While one point of view is that some have been "more" blessed than others, I would be inclined to reply with the old saying, "Comparisons are odious." Why suffer over what you don't have when you can rejoice in what you do have.

Deflect the blows of life

Play with life, laugh with life, dance lightly with life, and smile at the riddles of life, knowing that life’s only true lessons are writ small in the margin.

Life is unpredictable and unknowable. Attempting to resist life leads to suffering. Yet, floating through life like a dead log also leads to a loss of all joy. For a meaningful and joyous life, gently guide the forces of life in the direction of your goals.

The Cab Ride

I get a lot of sentimental and religious email that people think I should pass on to my 10 best friends. This one is different. See what you think...

The Cab Ride

I arrived at the address and honked the horn.
After waiting a few minutes
I walked to the
door and knocked.. 'Just a minute', answered a
frail, elderly voice. I could hear something
being dragged across the floor.

a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in
her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a
print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned
on it, like somebody out of a 1940's

By her side was a small nylon
suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had
lived in it for years. All the furniture was
covered with sheets.

There were no
clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils
on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard
box filled with photos and

'Thank you.'

I squeezed her
hand, and then walked into the dim morning

of the closing of a life..

I didn't

Appreciate the Unexpected

Appreciate the Unexpected

Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. - the movie Forrest Gump

We humans feel an instinctive need to know what is coming next - what we can count upon. While this is especially true when we are expecting something great, the tendency to want predictability is universal. If we are expecting our spouse to arrive home from the grocery store with a pound of hamburger and they show up with a steak, we may not be pleased with the special treat, but rather set off balance and therefore mildly upset by the surprise.

Consider that one of the dictionary meanings of the word "expect" is "demand." The path to happiness is to avoid making demands upon the world, and especially to avoid making demands upon the future.

Life is never predictable, and that is great with me. Boredom is not my preference. I really like the analogy of life to a box of chocolates because it reminds me that what I actually get is likely to be as sweet or sweeter than what I "expected," just different.

Tips for Keeping Your New Years Resolutions

Are you having trouble keeping your New Year's Resolutions? Here are some tips...

1. Get support. Find a friend, or perhaps create a whole team, to support you in keeping your resolutions. Select a person or people who believe in you, believe in the importance of your goals, believe in your ability to achieve your goals, but also support you lovingly when you backslide. Establish a regular schedule for reporting your progress to your friend or the team.

2. Set interim goals, preferably daily goals. Often the short term goals are obvious. If your resolution is to write the first draft of a 50,000 word novel in a hundred days, it is clear what you need to do each day. However, if your goal were to find a loving and compatible lifetime partner in the next six months, you would need to create a detailed plan and establish a hierarchy of interim goals.

3. Keep a journal of your progress. Record your progress daily, whatever the day's results turn out to be. If your resolution is writing a novel, record the days you throw a whole chapter into the trash as well as the days you write nothing, or ten pages or five.

4. Reward yourself for each day's accomplishment. This does not mean to reward yourself by backsliding. Let the reward for keeping to your diet be granting yourself time to read a great book, or making a small purchase, NOT eating a piece of chocolate.

5. Love, honor, and respect yourself whatever you do or do not do.
