We are most like God when we forgive

A wise one said, "We are most like God when we forgive." It is easy for us to blame, but hard for us to forgive. Yet that is what we are called upon to do - to forgive everyone for everything. And the reward? In this life, the reward for forgiveness is your own happiness. Unconditional universal forgiveness is the key to your own happiness.

Love others for your own sake. Love without regard to size, shape, external beauty, color, geography, or belief system. Do not offer your love to others merely in the hope of receiving their love in return. True love is a unilateral gift. The joy you receive comes from the act of giving. When others return your love, that is only a bonus. Love, like forgiveness, compassion and generosity, is its own reward.

  1. My relatives are nuts and any contact with them results in some kind of drama which usually hurts me deeply and opens up old wounds. Is it okay to forgive them and run away from them? They do not respond to kindness or love and are behave indifferently. i love them because they are my family, but truthfully, they do not love me or anyone else for that matter.

  2. Dear Anonymous, Your relatives aren't nuts, and they probably love you in their own way, they just have very different values than you do. Each of us lives in our own world. As to drama, hurt, and wounds, yes, it's unfortunately very common.

Forgiving is for yourself. You will gain great happiness for yourself if you can "let bygones by bygones" and "live and let live."

Hold no resentments or grudges, but don't spend time with people whose company you don't enjoy.

Think of the humorous quip from Fiddler on the Roof, "May God bless and keep the Tsar... far away from us."
