Joseph Campbell: The world is perfect. It's a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it.

The world is perfect. It's a mess. It has always been a mess. We are not going to change it. Our job is to straighten out our own lives. – Joseph Campbell
Minding other people's business doesn't create happiness for them or for me. In the words of the old saying, "Live and let live." Between living my own life and my commitment to sow a few seeds of joy in the world, my life is quite full, thank you. Read my Monastery Housekeeping story about minding other people's business.

After the original post, I received the following question:
Thank you for the inspiration! Did the quote by Joseph Campbell mean to say that the world is NOT perfect instead of saying that the world IS perfect? Just checking……
My response to the kind subscriber: Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for the question. The quote is accurate. I cannot know what was in Joseph Campbell's mind, but my interpretation is that the world is "perfect" because it exists exactly the way it does. If one believes in a benevolent and omnipotent God, the world is perfect because God created it exactly the way He did. If one is a humanist, the world is perfect simply because it is futile to wish for it be different - and such wishing causes suffering. Here is another quote that says perhaps the same thing in different words:
The world is perfect. As you question your mind, this becomes more and more obvious. Mind changes, and as a result, the world changes. A clear mind heals everything that needs to be healed. It can never be fooled into believing that there is one speck out of order. - Byron Katie
Today is your day to dance lightly with life. It really is.

  1. Hello, Jonathan Lockwood Huie,

I wish to thank you for the many insightful thoughts, quotes, sharing of various beliefs (which it seems to my thinking that most of the major, though they may have their differences, religions hold to the intensely similar comandments ( i.e. the ten commandments etc.) and the openess of many minds (yours in particular) being shared with your audience. It is so relieving to know that their are other people in this world that also allow for each of us to be free to have such variable questions and beliefs. Please forgive me that I do not always seem to be able to explain my meaning of my thoughts. However, I do want you to know that I definitely get the feeling that finally, when reading your shared Daily Inspirations, I have found another soul who believes so very many things that I do also, and especially that it is okay to think this way. Idon not seem to be able to express the marvelous sense of freedom of spirit that you have allowed me to enjoy life much more intensely! Enough said, if not too much. Thank you always!

Wishing you the very best in life,

    Maryalice

  2. Dear Jonathan, I would like to share a miracle that happened to me just yesterday. I was diagnosed with Hepatisis C over fifteen years I am from a wonderful family, and I did not do drugs or get tatoos or anything that is associated with thes desease. About 5/6 years ago I got treated with interferon for 3 months with a very slim chance of 20% to get cured. This last winter I had three heart failures and an open heart surery. Two months later I tripped and fell and broke my left arm. Just after that I had a disagreement with my doctor, so my family and I decided I should not go back to him. I frantically looked for another doctor, but no success, (no room in the inn) just when I needed a doctor so desparetly. To make a long story short I called th Ministry of Health and right away I was referred to a family doctor who is giving me special treatment.

Yesterday I went to get my prescriptions refilled, he looked through the file and found the results of my last blood test. He said that the hepatitis did not show in the antibody test! I was so shocked. I thought maybe it was the combination of the treatment and the better blood circulation...but no, I want to believe it is a miracle. I praise and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and give him thanks.
