Hold on... Joyfully. - jlh

sailboatHold on... Joyfully. - jlh

The tree in this picture is holding on. It has been holding on since it was a sapling, and will probably hold on for many more years. Its whole being is about holding on. Holding-on does not have to be a desperate teeth-gritting kind of holding-on. Holding-on can be a joyful "this is just the nature of Life, so I may as well enjoy it" kind of holding-on.

The Eye-of-the-Storm

sailboatThere is beauty and serenity in the eye of the storm. - jlh

The Eye-of-the-Storm. Surrounded by the winds and the rain, yet peaceful in its own unworldly way - an unnatural ruddy-cloudy misty-bright kind of way. Whatever comes next, the eye of the storm is a moment of serenity among the challenge - a time for repose and contemplation.

Forgiveness is our gift to ourselves

This week we continue with our overview of the concepts of SAIL: Simply An Inspired Life by looking at FORGIVENESS - the second of the Eight Points of SAIL.

FORGIVENESS - the second Point of SAIL
SAIL: HELM

I Forgive Myself with Compassion
- I forgive everyone, especially myself, for all actions and all inactions throughout my entire life. I accept that no one else has ever been to blame for either my joy or my suffering. The entire cause of all my joys and all my sufferings is my own emotional response to the events of my life, and I am committed to consistently distinguishing between my feelings about events and the physical occurrence of those events. I declare that everyone who has ever played any role in any of the events of my life is entirely without fault.
Why Forgive?
I'm angry. They wronged me, why should I forgive them? They lied, they cheated, why should I forgive them?

Forgiveness is not a reprieve or a gift that we give to someone else. Forgiveness for another's act or omission is a reprieve and gift that we give ourself. We are the one who suffers the upset and the anger when we feel that we have been wronged. It is our own blood pressure that rises when we hold on to resentment.

Give yourself the gift of forgiving others, not because "they" deserve it, but because you deserve the serenity and joy that comes from releasing resentment and anger, and from embracing universal forgiveness.

The greatest battle of all is simply... Life

sailboatWelcome the conquering Hero - and recognize that the Hero is... ourself. - jlh

The greatest battle of all is simply... Life. This is no child's game. This is the big one - the Super Bowl - the Game of all games. The rules of Life are unwritten and unknown. Perhaps, one could say that there are no rules. The Judge has ultimate power - She can call the game at any time - for any reason. The penalties in the Game are completely arbitrary - in both timing and severity. Penalty for what, we ask? The Judge is silent. How can I win the Game? "You can never win," comes the answer, "so just take pleasure in playing the Game."

Ask questions

sailboatWe Gain All Genuine Insight From Questions and Experiments. - jlh

Ask questions. If you don't like the answers, ask different questions. True insight usually comes from finding great questions rather than finding great answers.

Identify your assumptions (what you believe). Question how you feel when you hold those assumptions. Visualize holding different assumptions. Ask yourself how it feels to hold a different world-view.

For example, instead of seeking an answer to the question "how can I get more money," consider asking other questions. "What is most important to me?" "If I only had a month to live, what would I do?" "What relaxes me and brings me joy?"

You don't have the power to make life "fair," but you do have the power to make life joyful. - jlh

sailboat
You don't have the power to make life "fair," but you do have the power to make life joyful. - jlh

"I did the dishes, you need to take out the garbage." "you borrowed money from me, you need to pay it back." "my broker told me the market would go up, and just look." "It's not fair."

"Fair" is not a useful concept. Life is not "fair." You can't make life "fair." You can get angry. You can complain about life not being "fair." You can attempt revenge - perhaps violently. You can inflict great suffering upon yourself in the name of life being "unfair."

Get over it. Life isn't "fair." You can choose anger, resentment, revenge and suffering, or you can choose joy.

Choose Joy.

Tradition?

sailboatTradition is like a second-hand store. It is best to sort carefully between the treasures and the trash. See everything with new eyes.
- jlh

"We've done it that way for the last 200 years." or 20 years, or 2000 years. Tradition is neither necessarily a good thing, nor necessarily a bad thing. Whatever the issue, consider the issue itself with rational attention and make a considered choice.

Honor thy family

Life is all in the perspective we take on it. - jlh

sailboatLife is all in the perspective we take on it. - jlh

Today is a day to look at our life from different and broader perspectives - a good day to look at our lives from a perspective of thankfulness for what we have and a perspective of wonder at our very existence and the magnificence of the world we live in.
the path
a quote from LIVE BOLDLY

Unexpected events can set you back or set you up. It's all a matter of - perspective.
- mary anne radmacher

Life can look different from a distance

Put some distance between yourself and whatever is concerning you. Distance in space or time always creates a new perspective.

Get up-close-and-personal
Life looks different when you really get involved. You wouldn't get to watch the bee on the yellow flower if you didn't look closely.

Look at Life in a Different Light

Shine a bright light on your issues, or turn off the spotlight and take a broader view.

Look from a Different Angle

Approach life from a new angle. Assume nothing.

Pretend You Just Got to America

We just don't see what is familiar. When we go to a foreign land we really SEE because we don't already ASSUME what will be there.
Pretend your community is a foreign land and really SEE it. SEE your blessings - pit-toilets and bicycle-trucks are not romantic.

See Life as Play

Who said that life has to be serious?

See How Blessed We Are

We have more comfort, more wealth, and better health than ever before in history or anywhere else in the world. If we are not happy, perhaps we should count our blessings.
To the right is a fairly average American home of 150 years ago - a time of short painful lives before antibiotics and anesthetics. To the left is a Peruvian home which the family shares with its business of brewing chicha (home made corn beer) and preparing guinea pigs for traditional celebrations.

Choose to See Beauty and Joy

Much in life can be seen as ugly or beautiful - it's our choice. Why would we choose to see any part of life as ugly?

Choose to Celebrate Life

Choose to view life from the perspective of Celebration. Celebrate family, celebrate friends, celebrate love, celebrate different perspectives, celebrate all of life.

Keep your feet firmly planted on the ground as you reach for the stars

Suspended between earth and sky, my humanity draws from both, my tendrils reach for the energies of each. Spirit and Ground - equal yet opposite, the lightness and the solidarity, the ephemeral and the substantial. The substantial is no more and no less than the ephemeral, just different. - jlh

Today is a day to remember to keep your feet firmly planted on the ground as you reach for the stars.

Let every day be a Thanksgiving

Dear Jonathan,

Let Today be a Thanksgiving. - jlh

Every day, we have so much for which to be grateful. Let every day be a Thanksgiving. Let every day be a day we acknowledge our food, our family, our friends, our homes, our health, our very lives.

Food is a perfect symbol for all our gratitudes. Lift up a bowl of food in your fingertips, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and give thanks for Everything.

My Chosen Family
You are my family, but we don't share blood.
You are my family by choice.
The most powerful bond is the one that we choose.
I choose you as my friend, and rejoice.

How the SAIL project began

This week we continue with our overview of the concepts of SAIL: Simply An Inspired Life by looking at the HONOR - first of the Eight Points of SAIL.
HONOR - the first Point of SAIL
SAIL: HELM

I Honor My True Self
- I grant myself the Honor of being ME. I am unique in all time and space. I am beyond perceived scarcity, obligation, and the need for approval. I am Honored that Spirit has chosen to create ME.
How the SAIL project began
Suze Stewart horse paintingI (Jonathan) know mary anne because my wife Suze has been a dear friend of mary anne for many years. Whimsical colorful horse paintings are one of Suze' trademarks.

Last spring, I suggested a book title for mary anne to write, and mary anne responded that I should be the one to write that book. We compromised by agreeing to co-author the book that became the project now titled SAIL: Simply An Inspired Life.
SAIL: More Than a Book
We envision SAIL as encompassing far more than one book. The www.sail7.com web site, daily SAILing inspirations... and SAILings... are the beginning of this project. Look for a sequence of SAIL books, an continuing on-line community, and trainings to be offered around the United States.
Questions???
What would you like to see in future editions of SAILings? Do you have any comments or questions for either of us - either to be answered in SAILings, or personally?

Shed the scales from your eyes

Today is your day to shed the scales from your eyes.

Bringing a childlike wonder and a beginner's mind to life maximize both success and joy.
- jlh

Over the years, we come to see life as we expect it to be. We make assumptions about how things ARE. We make expectations of others and of ourselves based on those assumptions.

"Beginner Mind" is a Zen Buddhist term that describes moving past our assumptions of the nature of our life, and really SEEING our surroundings - especially the people we interact with - with new eyes.

Remember that nurturing yourself is as important (if not more so) as nurturing others.

SAILing through the storms of adversity

SAILing through the storms of adversity

Today, when the winds of adversity blow strong, redirect their force into the service of your highest intention.
- jonathan lockwood huie

There is an old saying: "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade." This is similar, but amplifies and focuses the concept.

As an example, a friend says something, and you get upset. Life just handed you a small lemon. The lemonade could be finally having that deep insightful conversation with your friend that you had been putting off. Or the lemonade might be finally reading that transformative book that holds the key to resist taking what anyone says personally.

The additional aspect of the SAILboat analogy is the idea that your friend's remark is a FORCE, like the wind, that you can redirect and use to power your intentions.

A quote from LIVE BOLDLY
the challenge before us is to savor the unknown and delight in the taste of possibility.

The Sailboat Metaphor

"SAIL" is more than just an acronym for Simply An Inspired Life. A metaphoric SAILboat is an ideal vehicle for our voyage through life's often troubled waters and stormy winds.

When life's storms blow, we could choose to play the tumbleweed, and let life blow us this way and that. Or we could hold on tight and resist as long as our strength holds out. We all know people who respond to life in those ways, and it isn't pretty.

Another way to encounter life is head-on. When we watch someone tilting at life like a Don Quixote, our first reaction may be "how brave," but soon we see the futility as our someone inevitably tires. Life can never be conquered by brute force.

Sailboats have mastery over the wind. A skillful sailor can sail in any direction - with the wind, across the wind, and even directly into the wind - by applying the skill and patience to "tack" from side to side - coming a little closer to an upwind destination with each turn.

As a karate fighter or a fencer parries and turns a stronger opponent's force back upon them, so too a sailboat uses the force of its opponent - the wind - to travel anywhere - even into the face of the storm itself.

Life often resembles a windy storm and we can best respond by turning the force of the storm to our own purposes. Once one begins to think like a SAILboat, life's storms start to look like a power we can utilize to design a Bold and Joyful life.
